The Head and Neck Oncology Department of Hunan Cancer Hospital is a professional medical department treating head and neck and maxillofacial malignant tumors in the nasal and paranasal sinuses, oral and maxillofacial region, larynx, hypopharynx, cervical esophagus and thyroid.
The department is featured with superior conditions and a comfortable environment with 48 authorized beds. It has three chief physicians, one associate chief physicians, two attending doctors, and two residents; of the 14 nurses, one is a chief nurse, one associate chief nurse and four supervisor nurses.
The department is located on the 2nd floor of the former hospital building (tel: 0731-89762020). The medical team of the department are well known for their skills and expertise. Close collaboration exists between the department and various departments of surgery and radiology. Multidisciplinary consultation by hospital specialists is a routine for head and neck cancer patients. For each patient, “tailored” therapies are adopted and the most reasonable comprehensive and individualized treatment plan is implemented. Comprehensive treatment measures include preoperative induction chemotherapy, synchronous chemotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy, raising the locoregional control rates of some advanced head and neck cancers, ensuring a better quality of life and improving progression-free survival for patients; even some terminally ill patients get a chance to receive radical surgery.
The department forges ahead unremittingly and keeps abreast of the new developments in oncology. Dedication is made by the department staff to molecular targeted therapy for head and neck cancers; and they also take an active part in all kinds of clinical trials and project application, winning several research projects from provincial government offices and Hunan Health Department. Staff members of the department have acted as independent applicants for a number of provincial departmentelevel projects, published dozens of academic or research papers, and been awarded two scientific research prizes of Hunan Science and Technology Department and Hunan Health Department. The department keeps a long-term cooperation relationship with the Tumor Blood Center of Henri Mordor Hospital in France, domestic well-known specialized tumor hospitals, and the National Cancer Institute, timely keeping up with the medical trends at home and abroad and better providing high-quality services for all the patients.
